The winner of the first Smart Energy Trivia Tournament, sponsored by the Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, is Ms Ibriel Holder.
A 19-year-old electrical installation student at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology, Ms Holder received an iPad Air tablet and $500 in cash for the primary or secondary school of her choice. She selected her former primary school, Welches Primary School, to receive the donation. In making the presentation to Principal Greig Walters, Ms Holder explained she knew the institution would find a good use for the funds. Science Coordinator, Ms Mona Jones, who knew Ms Holder when she was a student at Welches Primary, thanked the former head girl for her kind gesture.
The Smart Energy Trivia Tournament, designed for young Barbadians, utilised a playful digital quiz to share important energy efficiency tips, renewable energy data and techniques that will help the country reach its 2030 goal of being 100% renewable. It is part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to promote and create awareness of the Barbados National Energy Policy (BNEP).
“We believe it is extremely important to share information about the types of renewable energy that we want to promote in Barbados, and the actions that all the Energy Champions out there can do to help us reach our goals” , explained, Keisha Reid, Project Manager for the Public Sector Smart Energy Programme in the Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
She added, “This is the rationale for us creating this modern digital space, which we hope our youth will enjoy and get involved with.”
The second place winner in the Smart Energy Trivia Tournament was Ms Miranda Douglas, who won a $200 shopping voucher, while Ms Simone Mayers won third prize with a $150 shopping voucher. The tournament was held on Saturday, March 13th, 2021 and saw 40 participants join the Facebook Live event to compete on their energy knowledge.
