2020 brought a new reality to Barbados and the globe. Suddenly our worst fears of being vulnerable to external shocks and our dependence on the rest of the world materialised.
Despite these setbacks, the future is still bright. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Barbados Government developed an ambitious and inspiring pathway to clean energy. The objectives are to make Barbados energy independent through renewable energy and to reduce the cost of energy for all Barbadians.
This vision is laid out in the Barbados National Energy Policy (BNEP), which aims to build a stable future for Barbados, while helping us shine bright in the world as a Caribbean leader in the energy revolution. BNEP’s overarching goal is for Barbados to be powered by 100% renewable energy come 2030. This target is ambitious but attainable if all Barbadians come on board.
Our clean energy future will bring economic, environmental, and social benefits to the entire country, but building it requires the recruitment of many champions – Energy Champions to be precise. The good news is, everyone can be an Energy Champion for Barbados. From the child reminding his parents to turn off the lights, to the technician installing cutting-edge energy technologies, to the electric bus driver. Energy Champions practice energy efficiency in their daily life and inspire others to do the same.
Through the Public Sector Smart Energy Program (PSSEP), the Ministry of Energy, Small Business and Entrepreneurship is implementing a communications strategy to improve public awareness of BNEP and outline how we will achieve the 2030 renewable energy goals. The first campaign from this strategy is the “Energy Champion Challenge”.
